What Atlantic Dance really needs…
Word is, they will be trying out some themed dance nights at the Boardwalk’s Atlantic Dance Hall in the coming weeks…90’s night, techno night, etc. As a DVC owner at the Boardwalk, let me say that to me, this sounds awful. The Boardwalk is not Pleasure Island and no themed dance night of any kind will draw a dance crowd.
As I have been saying for years to anyone who will listen (and many who won’t!) what Atlantic Dance needs is a dinner show — something along the lines of Hoop-De-Doo, geared toward families, but with a theme that takes advantage of the incredibly beautiful space that is currently being wasted there. Something with a speak-easy and/or Vaudeville theme, and with a live big band providing the music. There could be a light storyline, or it could be purely a variety show; one tune fast and fun like Brian Setzer’s “Jump Jive and Wail,” the next a slow torch song by a sultry female singer, then maybe even an Abbot and Costello-style comedy skit, followed by more big band, maybe with Broadway-style dancers on stage or even on the floor. The possibilities are endless!
I think it would lend itself perfectly to the kind of crowd that the Boardwalk already draws, and provide the kind of marquee event that the Boardwalk needs. They could easily fill Atlantic Dance with a paying crowd four nights a week at the very least.
I love Atlantic Dance — it is just such a beautiful spot. If you have never been there, you must see it. The ambience is amazing, like traveling back in time. A show like this, if it were done right, would have me going back there once every trip!
